Research Interests
 
  • My primary research interests include: 1) risk management, health, and safety operations of aquatic facilities and programs; b) lifeguard training, rescue skills and performance of aquatic personnel in aquatic emergencies; 3) water safety and drowning prevention; and 4) diversity and multicultural trends in aquatic programs.

 

Current Research Projects  
  • Research Assistant & Standards Writing Committee: United States Lifeguard Standards Coalition (YMCA, American Red Cross, United States Lifesaving Association)-mission is to research, identify and promote evidence-based standards for lifeguarding and water rescue.  A joint collaboration between YMCA, American Red Cross, and USLA with a grant support from the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF).  (2006-present)
  • Research Assistant & Standards Writing Committee: The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP)- charged by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), national research to develop national standards for Operational Safety & Risk Management for Public Swimming Pools. (2006-present)

 

Past Research Projects  

 

  •  Research Assistant: Prevalence of Youth Obesity and Associated Behaviors Among North Alabama Third-Grade Students.  Principal investigator Dr. James Reid, research conducted at Alabama A&M University and presented at 81st Annual Conference of the American School Health Association, held in Honolulu, Hawaii (2007). 
  • Research Assistant: Certified Pool Operators: Does Certification Provide Significant Results in Real-World Pool and Spa Chemistry?-conducted, collected, measured and recorded data from a Comprehensive Aquatic Facility Risk Management Assessment (2001).  Research published; Johnston, K., Kinziger, M.  International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education, 2007, 1, 18-33.
  • Research Assistant: Comparison of the American Red Cross and Young Men’s Christian Association Rescue Procedures For A Passive Near-Drowning Victim.  Principal investigator: Rob Porter, 1997 Master’s Thesis, Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
  • Field Testing Team Swimming Rescue Skills for Multiple Drowning Victims Scenarios.  Research conducted and directed by Dr. Ralph L. Johnson, at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, for the 1997 YMCA Lifeguard Training Program -On the Guard II (3rd edition).
  • Research Assistant: A Comparison of Energy Expenditures Between Vertical and Horizontal Water Exercises. Principal investigator: Scott W. Wray, 1997 Master’s Thesis Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
